Metastasis of Pulmonary Ground-glass Opacities was first confirmed--- PKU People’s Hospital WANG Jun Research Team and PKU School of Life Sciences BAI Fan Research Group published their findings on Thorax

On Oct. 23rd, 2017, PKU People's Hospital Department of Thoracic Surgery WANG Jun research team, working with PKU School of Life Sciences Biodynamic Optical Imaging Center BAI Fan research group, published online their research findings on Thorax, a famous journal in the field of respiratory system. Their report is entitled "Early Metastasis detected in patients with multifocal pulmonary ground-glass opacities (GGOs)". Through the 2nd generation sequencing technology, and from gene mutation angle, the research confirmed for the first time that metastasis could also happen even for pure GGO.

Lung cancer is a malignant tumor with the world’s highest morality rate. In recent years, with the development of low-dose CT screening project, the discovery rate of GGO ( ground glass opacity)has been greatly improved. According to Prof. WANG Jun, GGO is not necessarily lung cancer, and it might be caused by lung inflammation, bleeding, or postinflammatory fibrosis. However, a considerable proportion of relatively limited circle-like GGOs can lead to early lung cancer. Through Full Exon Sequencing, the team was surprised to find that for multiple GGOs, multiple sources (primary) and metastases coexist, which further confirmed that GGO is the early lesion of lung cancer.

The research results confirmed that, in multiple GGO patients, multi-source lung cancer coexist with pulmonary metastasis, and the primary and metastatic lesions are both GGO lesions. These findings pose a challenge to the common view currently held by the Fleischner Radiation Society and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), and are of great significance to the study of GGO.
