As the most prestigious comprehensive medical institution in China, Peking University Health Science Center (PUHSC) developed out of Peking Medical School, the first national school of western medicine established by the Chinese government through its own efforts. Since its inception in 1912, PUHSC has cultivated a large number of high-level medical and health talents for the country, and has made outstanding contributions to improving the health of Chinese people.

• Medical education and faculty team

　　PUHSC has five academic schools, namely, School of Basic Medical Sciences, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Public Health, School of Nursing, and Faculty of Foundation Education. In addition, it has eight nationally known affiliated hospitals. PUHSC is contributed to medical education, scientific research, and clinical service. It attaches importance to the education of undergraduate and postgraduate students. It has 54 accredited doctoral programs and 61 master programs. It has an enrollment of 3494 undergraduates, 3888 postgraduate students, and 506 international students.

　　PUHSC accumulates a big group of internationally or nationally known experts on medical education, research, and clinical practice. It has 881 full professors and 1320 associate professors, 12 academicians at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, and 20 Cheung Kong Scholars.

• Scientific research and transfer

　　PUHSC has been leading China in medical science research. It has one state key laboratory, 17 ministerial key laboratories, 19 research institutes, and 38 research centers. It undertakes key research programs including National Mega Projects from Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Key Projects from National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), and “863” and “973” projects. From 2002 to 2010, it has published 4264 SCI-cited research articles, continuing to be ranked first in China￠s medical field for years. A number of high quality papers have been published in international top journals including Nature, Cell, New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, etc. From 2006 to 2010, PUHSC has got 1432 projects funded, with an overall funding of 627 million.Most of the funds are from MOST and NSFC. In addition, PUHSC also gets government special funding from“211 Project” and “985 Project”, with an overall funding of 270 million (from 1996 to 2011)and 1656 million (from 2000 to 2013), respectively (see table 1).

　　PUHSC has eight affiliated hospitals, five of which are general hospitals and three are specialized ones. Totally, these hospitals have 7179 beds, treat around 10 million outpatients per year, and conduct over 105thousand surgeries. Besides, PUHSC has 15 teaching hospitals. In order to accelerate the translation of bench to bedside, PUHSC established the Clinical Research Institute in 2008, which canmake better use of the abundant clinical research resources from the affiliated hospitals.

• International cooperation

　　PUHSC has established long-term cooperation with globally known universities, drug research institutions, Non-Governmental Organizations, and international pharmaceutical groups. At present, it has developed collaborativerelationships with over 100 internationally prestigious universities, including Yale University, University of Michigan, University of British Columbia, University of Edinburgh, Karolinska Institute, Erasmus University, Keio University, etc. Main collaboration forms are student and staff exchange, joint degree program/MD+PhD program, international scholarship, joint symposiums, joint research center, etc. Through win-win international partnership, PUHSC has been actively building a high-level platform for students and experts at home and abroad, and promoting the influence and competitiveness of PUHSC.

　　Today, PUHSC is developing rapidly. With the strong support from the central government, with its academic tradition of “Diligence, Rigor, Objectivity, and Creativity” and its lifelong conception that “scientific research should serve the society”, the faculties, staff, and students of PUHSC will unite together to pursue the next brilliance in medical education, research, and clinical service.
