Head of Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience of Cambridge Visits PKUHSC

From March 27 till 31, 2025, Professor William Colledge, Head of Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience, University of Cambridge, visited Peking University Health Science Center together with Dr. Sue Jones. They also conducted a five-day academic exchange. During their visit, Qiao Jie, Executive Vice President of PKU and President of PKUHSC, met with the guests. The visit covered academic reports, academic seminars, cooperation negotiations, student exchanges and platform visits, laying a solid foundation for the in-depth cooperation between the two universities in the fields of neuroscience ad reproductive medicine.

On March 27, Professor Colledge and Dr. Jones visited PKU School of Basic Medical Sciences. They delivered reports on “Key roles of Kisspeptin in reproductive health” and “Mechanisms of neuroplasticity in brain development” respectively.

On that day’s afternoon, a symposium titled “Dialog with Cambridge Elite Minds: Navigating Academic Journeys and Frontiers” was held as the second phase of the international vision enhancement program. 15 students had face-to-face exchanges with the two professors. Everyone engaged in discussions on issues such as the choice of research paths and cultural adaptation, and the atmosphere on the spot was very lively.

Afterwards, Professor Colledge met with Huang Zhuo, Vice Dean of PKU School of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The two sides explored potential collaboration in the field of pharmaceutical sciences.

From March 29 to 30, Professor Colledge and Dr. Jones participated and made keynote speeches in “PKU Third Hospital’s 27th Training Session of Reproductive Endocrinology and Assisted Reproductive Technology” hosted by PKUTH and co-organized by the National Center for Clinical Research on Gynecological and Obstetric Diseases. Professor Colledge revealed the core role of Kisspeptin protein in reproductive regulation with a speech titled “Why does kissing affect reproduction? —The evolutionary code of Kisspeptin protein”. Dr. Jones expounded the mechanism of Kisspeptin neurons as “molecular switches” in puberty through “The study on the plasticity of hypothalamic neurons in puberty.”

On March 31, Professor Colledge and Dr. Jones visited PKUTH Reproductive Center. They also introduced relative laboratories at University of Cambridge to the reproductive team, which built a communication bridge for further cooperation.
