Expert from the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina Visits Endocrinology Department of PKUTH

From May 21 to June 3, 2025, Associate Professor Santiago from the Department of Genetics of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) in Argentina visited the Department of Endocrinology of Peking University Third Hospital as a visiting scholar sponsored by the joint program of UBA and PKU. During this period the two sides conducted academic exchanges on the signaling pathways and epigenetic mechanisms of pancreatic β-cell development and regeneration.

During his visit, Santiago delivered two specialized reports. In the report “Epigenomic regulation of pancreatic β-cell development and regeneration”, Santiago presented the systematic research findings of his team in the field of β-cell development and regeneration. In the report “Endogenous glucocorticoid receptor activation regulates early cell differentiation of pancreatic progenitor cells in mice and humans”, Santiago described the new function of glucocorticoid receptors in pancreatic development. The participants discussed with Santiago on issues such as the regulatory mechanism of pancreatic development, the differences in pancreatic embryo development between humans and mice, and the impact of medication during pregnancy on islet development.

In recent years, the Endocrinology Department of PKUTH has continuously focused on research in areas such as diabetes regeneration and regulation of pancreatic β-cell function. It has also been expanding its influence in the academic community both domestically and internationally. This visit of Santiago not only deepened the academic exchanges between the two sides in the field of pancreatic development and regeneration regulation, but also laid a solid foundation for future substantive scientific research cooperation.
