PKU Cancer Hospital Doctors Awarded at WCLC 2026
Two doctors from Peking University Cancer Hospital were honored with two prestigious academic awards in September 13 at the Presidential Forum of the 2026 World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC 2026). Prof. Wu Nan from the Department of Thoracic Surgery was awarded the Tsuguo Naruke Lectureship Award for Surgery; Xiao Bufan, a PhD candidate in his research team, received the Early Career Education Award.
Hosted by the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC), the WCLC is the world’s largest academic conference dedicated to lung cancer and thoracic oncology. This year’s conference featured more than 130 academic sessions and workshops, drawing over 7,000 delegates from more than 100 countries and regions.
The Lectureship Awards cover 9 categories. The Tsuguo Naruke Lectureship Award for Surgery specifically recognizes outstanding thoracic surgery experts who advance the precision of lung cancer surgery and the international standardization of surgical practices. Prof. Wu is the only scholar from the Chinese mainland among this year’s Lectureship Award recipients.

Prof. Wu currently serves as Vice President, Chief Physician, Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at Peking University Cancer Hospital, with over 20 years of clinical experience in thoracic surgery. His main research areas include surgical treatment and enhanced recovery after surgery for complex and refractory lung cancer and esophageal cancer; clinical research on novel therapies for complex thoracic tumors; research and application of biomarkers for early detection and differential diagnosis of thoracic tumors; and the application of cutting-edge digital technologies in the full-process management of lung cancer diagnosis and treatment. His receipt of the award reflects international peers’ recognition of his integrated work in precision surgery, standardized staging, data standardization and clinical translation.

Xiao Bufan’s award-winning research addresses a key challenge in CAR-T therapy for solid tumors. It explores a novel approach to enabling more sufficient infiltration of immune cells into lung tumors while sustaining their cytotoxic function in the tumor microenvironment. This study provides new preclinical insights for overcoming the infiltration barrier in CAR-T therapy for solid tumors, and exemplifies the innovative direction of thoracic surgery: starting from clinical problems to advance the interdisciplinary integration of surgery, immunotherapy and delivery technologies.
