Editor’s note: Peking University is going to celebrate its 120 anniversary on May 4. On this occasion, we selected twelve key words to present to the reader a vivid and rich Beida Medicine in terms of spiritual value and the fruits of reform and development.

　1.　Beida Medicine

　　“The innovation of medical science and technology and the integration of disciplines are the two main means to promote the development of medicine.” Zhan Qimin, Vice President of Peking University and President of Peking University Health Science Center (PKUHSC), and Liu Yucun, Deputy Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) PKU Committee and Secretary of CPC PKUHSC Committee, proposed the strategic idea of “Beida Medicine”.

　　The idea of Beida Medicine aims to break through the barriers between disciplines and to integrate via medicine all the resources of PKU which are related to the development of medicine, including the integration of medicine and engineering, of medicine and sciences, and of medicine and such emerging disciplines like bio-information and big data.

　2.　Hou Dao

　　The spirit and character of PKUHSC can be concluded by hou dao, the two Chinese characters inscribed on the Mt. Tai stone standing tall at the west gate of PKUHSC. The spirit of hou dao is represented by the pursuit of perfection on the path to knowledge and techniques, the bravery to shoulder social responsibility and the fast hold to morals of teacher and doctor on the path of morality, and the appreciation of humanity and the caring for patients on the path of understanding. Hou dao is inscribed not only on the stone, but also on the mind of Beiyi (PKUHSC) people, and has become the symbol of Beiyi people.

　3.　Clinical Medicine plus X

　　“Clinical Medicine plus X” is one of the three key areas in PKU’s strategic plan of the “Double First Class” university. It aims to establish a more direct connection between the clinical health care and the basic research. Based on the advantage of PKU’s comprehensive setup of disciplines, “Clinical Medicine plus X” emphasizes integration, collaboration and innovation, and advantage complementation. It will build cross-disciplinary research teams and hatch new disciplines in medical technology by way of establishing “Clinical Medicine plus X” special programs and seed funds for interdisciplinary research, so as to turn out a series of cross-disciplinary research achievements, to tackle the problem in clinical medicine, and to improve the clinical diagnosis.

　4.　Achievements in Scientific Research

　　In recent years, Beida Medicine has embraced a series of leading national key projects in such fields as reproduction and growth, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, chronic kidney disease research, mental disease research, and 3D printing of orthopedic materials. In the past five years, there have been 8151 SCI papers published with PKUHSC as the key author organization, the highest impact factor of which was 72.406. From 2013 to 2017, PKUHSC won altogether 160 awards of all sorts at all levels, among which ten were national awards in science and technology, 44 were ministerial and provincial awards in science and technology, and 106 were social prizes. Furthermore, PKUHSC is one of the most important bases for medical innovative research in our country. From 2013 to 2017, PKUHSC applied for 1317 patents and 1222 were granted.

　5.　“Double First Class” Disciplines

　　The year of 2017 was the first year of “Double First Class” Initiative. PKU has been selected into the list of “First Class” universities and “First Class” disciplines. PKUHSC’s basic medicine, clinical medicine, stomatology, pharmaceutics, public health and preventive medicine, and nursing have been selected as “Double First Class” disciplines, heading the list of universities with medical sciences. PKUHSC also stood out in the fourth round of the disciplinary evaluation by the Ministry of Education, having basic medicine, stomatology, pharmaceutics, clinical medicine, and public health and preventive medicine ranking A level. Basic medicine and stomatology were evaluated as A plus, which topped all the universities with medical and pharmaceutical sciences.

　6.　Whole-Person Educational Theory

　　The medical education has always had the whole-person education as its guiding theory. The medical education reform of “New Approach”, starting from 2008, has integrated education with teaching and bettered the curriculum system. The reform lays stress on core curriculum study, the problem-based and the organ-based case study teaching. It also emphasizes students’ individualized development and the student-centered education, which advocates innovative spirit and critical thinking.

　7.　Sailing in the Same Boat

　　The postgraduate education of Beida Medicine undertakes social responsibilities, faces social needs, and serves national strategies. It highlights the characteristics of Beida Medicine and takes the leading role in exploring the training modes and discipline building plans for high-level national talents of medicine in such fields as doctor in applied public health, doctor in applied pharmaceutics, and master in applied medical technology. It encourages the medical postgraduates to employ their knowledge to push the society forward by way of social practice, medical popularization, and the “In-the-Same-Boat Plan” activity. It answers the government call to aid the frontier building and to share the experience in training the high-level talents of medicine, so as to promote the continuous development of the cause of our country’s medical postgraduate education.

　8.　Medical Care

　　The clinical system of PKUHSC includes 6 directly affiliated hospitals, 4 co-building affiliated hospitals and 14 clinical teaching hospitals. Presently, PKUHSC embraces a large number of domestic innovative clinical disciplines, many pioneering techniques in diagnosis and treatment, and national and worldwide famous clinical institutes and medical care centers. It also has a dozen advantageous disciplines such as China’s best sports medicine, reproductive medicine, nephrology, urology, traumatic orthopedics, hematology, stomatology, gastrointestinal tumor, and psychiatry. PKUHSC won 68 key disciplines from the former Ministry of Health, which made outstanding resources for the implementation of the “Clinical Medicine plus X”. Meanwhile, all the affiliated hospitals undertake large amount of medical work and provide the continuous high quality medical service. Presently, there are more than ten thousand beds in the affiliated hospitals. From 2012 to 2016, the 6 directly affiliated hospitals treated 50 million outpatients, 3 million emergency patients, and discharged more than 1.36 million people from hospital. They’ve made great contributions to the cause of medical care and hygiene in Beijing and nationwide.

　9.　Social Responsibilities

　　All the affiliated hospitals of PKU have always been taking it as their duty to serve the country and the society. In the fight with the SARS and earthquake relief work, they immediately dispatched medical experts to the frontline to deliver medical aid and treatment. And they’ve made outstanding contributions to the medical care work in significant affairs such as aiding the western regions, Tibet and Xinjiang, and the Olympic Games. Since 2015, on the call of the Organization Department of the Central Committee of CPC and the National Health Commission, those hospitals have actively carried out the recruitment of medical talents for the Tibet-aiding project, which demonstrates the role of “national team” and “spearhead” of Beida Medicine. At the same time, the hospitals have participated in the pilot reform program, which has provided practical experience and theoretical foundation for the national reform of medical care system.

　10.　National Center for Medical Education Development

　　On the commission of the Ministry of Education, PKU National Center for Medical Education Development will be established on May 16, 2018. Uniting the medical education experts and scholars from home and abroad, the Center will carry out the national research on medical education, quality evaluation and accreditation, management training, and international cooperation, so as to provide consultation and basis in the field for medicine and medical education for government decision-making and hence facilitate the strategic implementation of Health China. The Center will also explore the establishment of disciplines of medical education and of management of medical education in order to foster special talents in the field of medical education.

　11.　Center for Data Science in Health and Medicine

　　On August 28, 2016, PKU Center for Data Science in Health and Medicine was established. Integrating multi-sourced big data in health care and applying internationally cutting-edge data procession and analytical techniques, the Center provides the data-based decision-making support for the national strategy of health care, medical practice, and health management of the total population. Together with the Center for Precision Medicine and Multi-Disciplinary Research, the National Institute of Data Science in Health and Medicine, the Center for Molecular Imaging, the Center for Intelligent Medicine, the Medical Interdisciplinary Institute, and the Tu Youyou Institute of Innovative Drugs, the Center helps Beida Medicine to fulfill the role of think tank in hygiene politics and creates a favorable environment to undertake significant national tasks.

　12.　World-Class Center for Medicine

　　PKUHSC has always been pushing forward the collaboration of Beida Medicine and the world top universities to work for mutual benefits in research with its leading role. PKUHSC has been promoting the training of internationalized talents by way of long- and short-term overseas student programs, and the training of internationalized doctors and postdoctoral programs by way of establishing centers for international cooperation. PKUHSC’s 13^th Congress of Party Representatives proposed to build Beida Medicine into a world-class center for medicine that provides high-quality medical care. PKU will not become the world-class university with Chinese characteristics without the very important part of the world-class center for medicine. The world-class center for medicine is the vision for Beida Medicine. Just as President Zhan Qimin and Secretary Liu Yucun put it, “Beida Medicine should be the national center for medicine, and will be the world center for medicine as well in the future.”
