Nobel Laureate Professor Semenza Visits Peking University Health Science Center

On November 11th, Professor Gregg L. Semenza—2019 Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, Member of the National Academy of Sciences (USA), Member of the National Academy of Medicine (USA), and Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences—visited Peking University Health Science Center (PKUHSC) as a guest speaker of the lecture series of “Dialogue with Nobel Laureates”. He delivered an academic report titled “Targeting Hypoxia-Inducible Factors for Cancer Therapy,” systematically elaborating on the key mechanisms of Hypoxia-Inducible Factors (HIF) in tumor initiation and progression, as well as the latest advances in targeted therapy. The lecture was hosted by Professor Wang Cunyu, Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Member of the National Academy of Medicine (USA), and Director of Peking University Institute of Advanced Clinical Medicine.

In the interactive session following the report, Professor Semenza engaged in in-depth exchanges with teachers and students on site regarding topics such as the translational prospects of HIF-targeted drugs, drug resistance mechanisms, and combination therapy strategies. Participants actively raised questions, and Professor Semenza responded to each one based on his own research experience while encouraging young scholars to boldly explore cutting-edge issues in tumor biology. The on-site discussion was enthusiastic, with a strong academic atmosphere.

The “Dialogue with Nobel Laureates” event was co-hosted by Peking University Institute of Advanced Clinical Medicine and the Office of International Cooperation of PKUHSC. It not only built a bridge for teachers and students at PKUHSC to engage in direct dialogue with top international scholars, but also deepened the academic community’s understanding of tumor biology mechanisms and new targeted therapy strategies, effectively promoting high-level international scientific research cooperation and academic exchanges.
